How We Work

Every NICER product is shaped by the place where it's made.

We call this principle Locus — from the Latin for "place." It's the idea that a product's character should be inseparable from the landscape that produced it: the minerals in the ground, the botanicals on the hillside, the beeswax from local hives foraging on native wildflowers. The same way a wine's identity is bound to its terroir, our formulations are bound to the land beneath our feet.

Our founding chapter is Park City, Utah — where 200-million-year-old sea mineral deposits from a Jurassic inland sea sit beneath high-desert foothills, and where local beekeepers tend hives that forage on native wildflowers across the Wasatch. The ancient salt anchors our styling products. The beeswax seals our balms and lip care. A dry alpine climate demands products that perform without compromise, and everything we make here carries the signature of this landscape. As NICER grows and new chapters open in new places, the formulation philosophy stays constant. The ingredients evolve with the land.

This isn't a marketing concept applied to existing products. It's the natural expression of how our founder already works: an environmental scientist with a Geography degree, building bodycare from the materials available in the place where he lives and makes.

The Discipline

The Precautionary Principle

Most of the beauty industry operates on a simple assumption: an ingredient is fine until someone proves it isn't. We reverse that. If an ingredient's safety and efficacy aren't established by peer-reviewed science, it doesn't go in. The burden of proof is on the ingredient, not on your skin.

This is the same standard used in environmental protection — where you don't introduce a compound into an ecosystem until you've demonstrated it's safe. We apply it to the ecosystem that is your body.

3 to 9 Ingredients

Every NICER product contains between 3 and 9 ingredients. Not because we're minimalists for the sake of it, but because at that scale we can fully account for every interaction, every metabolic pathway, and every environmental endpoint. We know what each ingredient does on your skin and what it does after.

This is also what makes place-based formulation possible. With 3 to 9 ingredients, every component is visible — you can taste the terroir. In a 40-ingredient product, local sourcing is marketing noise. In ours, it's the whole story.

Regenerative Sourcing

We source organic, regenerative, and wildcrafted ingredients wherever possible — and we're working toward making that universal across every product. Where certified organic or regenerative options exist for an ingredient, we use them. Where they don't yet, we choose the highest-quality option available and keep looking. Our suppliers are people we know and relationships we maintain, because accountability starts with knowing where your ingredients come from and how they were grown.

Full Transparency

Every ingredient in every product is listed, fully, by name. We don't use the word "fragrance" to conceal proprietary blends. We don't hide behind trade secret protections. With 3 to 9 ingredients, there's nothing to obscure — and we wouldn't obscure it if there were.

Certificates of analysis are available on request. If you want to know where an ingredient comes from and why we chose it, ask. We'll tell you.

Small-Batch Production

Every product is handcrafted in small batches near Park City. Our founder handles every stage of production — not as a quality control step at the end of a line, but as a continuous process of attention. This is how we maintain the precision that simple formulations demand, and how we catch what instruments don't measure.

The Commitment

Public Benefit Corporation

NICER is structured as a Public Benefit Corporation — a legal designation that writes our mission into our corporate charter. We are bound by law to consider the impact of our decisions on human health, the environment, and our communities — not just on profit. This commitment can't be undone by growth, acquisition, or market pressure. It's structural, not aspirational.

1% for the Planet

We donate at least 1% of revenue to organizations working at the intersection of environmental protection and community health. Every purchase supports that commitment.

What We Don't Use

We don't maintain a list of banned ingredients — because our approach makes one unnecessary. We don't start with a full palette and subtract the harmful ones. We start with nothing and add only what the science supports.

That said, you'll never find synthetic fragrances, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, silicones, petroleum derivatives, or drying alcohols in our products. Not because they're on a list, but because none of them survive our standard.

Read labels. Not just ours — everything you put on your skin. Ask what's in it, where it comes from, and what the evidence says. The more questions you ask, the better the industry gets.

If you want to start with ours, every ingredient in every NICER product is documented, sourced, and backed by published research. We welcome the scrutiny.

Rooted in place, refined by science.
